Testimonials
I recently had the pleasure of reading The Hoot Hoot Way by Rebecca Marshall and Janine Appleby, and it is such a thoughtful, engaging, and much-needed resource for children, educators, and families.
What stands out most about this book is how naturally it opens up important conversations with children around safety, care, and belonging. Through the gentle guidance of Miss Owl and her lovable cast of characters, children are introduced to big ideas in a way that feels safe, playful, and accessible. Concepts like “everyone belongs” and “my body belongs to me” are woven beautifully into the story, creating meaningful opportunities for discussion and learning beyond the pages.
The repetition of the “Hoot Hoot Hooray” rhythm, along with the inclusion of a song, makes the book highly engaging and memorable for young readers. It invites participation, keeps children interested, and reinforces key messages in a way that sticks.
The illustrations are bright, warm, and full of life, perfectly complementing the tone of the story. Miss Owl is both nurturing and reassuring, modelling what safe, responsive care looks like, while also empowering children to speak up, express their feelings, and understand their rights.
What I particularly love is how practical and intentional the book is. It doesn’t just tell children they are safe and valued—it shows them what that looks like in everyday moments. It also provides a wonderful foundation for educators and parents to extend learning through conversations, activities, and reflection.
The Hoot Hoot Way is a beautiful, child-friendly resource that supports children to feel seen, heard, and safe, while giving adults the language and confidence to talk about topics that really matter.
A truly meaningful and impactful book.
